Singapore - Tuas TV World
Once upon a time, Tuas TV World, which cost 35 million Singapore dollars, will be razed to the ground in the second quarter of 2024 and go down in history.
It was built between 1990 and 1992 by Singapore Broadcasting Corporation - an antecedent of MediaCorp.
The 6.6 hectares facility, an area approximately equal to 9.2 football fields, had eight sets, with five depicting old Singapore and three of China, which can be used for filming period dramas and costume dramas.
Dramas filmed during Tuas TV World's heyday in the 90s include "Strange Encounter 3", "Tofu Street", "The Price Of Peace", "Wok of Life" and "Hainan Kopi Tales".
If I recall correctly, Tuas TV World was not open to the public.
I was fortunate enough to be part of a costume drama, so went there once.
In my impression, the streetscapes and buildings were designed so lifelike that they were almost exactly the same as the real one.
Tuas TV World had been in operation for less than ten years; due to high operating cost, it ceased operation after filming of "Heroes In Black" in 2001.
When the glamour is over and its brilliance fades away, it is about time to step down and take a bow!
