Shwedagon Pagoda

Myanmar - Yangon (Shwedagon Pagoda)

The Shwedagon Pagoda, officially named Shwedagon Zedi Daw, is also known as The Great Dagon Pagoda or The Golden Pagoda.

The 99 metres tall pagoda is situated on Singuttara Hill, to the west of Kandawgyi Lake, and dominates the Yangon skyline.

Shwedagon Pagoda is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar.

It is believed to contain relics of the four previous Buddhas of the present kalpa.

Kalpa is a Sanskrit word meaning an aeon, or a relatively long period of time by human calculation in Hindu and Buddhist cosmology.

These relics include the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Koṇāgamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa, and eight strands of hair from the head of Gautama.

The Shwedagon Pagoda is a symbolic icon of Myanmar and Yangon, just like Cambodia's Angkor Wat and the Borobudur of Indonesia's Java island which are known as the "Three Monuments in Southeast Asia".

The base of the stupa is made of bricks covered with gold plates.

Stupa is a Sanskrit word meaning hemispherical structure containing relics that is used as a place of meditation.

Above the base are terraces that only monks and other males can access.

Next is the bell-shaped part of the stupa and above that is the turban.

Then the inverted almsbowl, inverted and upright lotus petals, the banana bud and then the umbrella crown.

The crown is tipped with 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies.

Immediately before the diamond bud is a flag-shaped vane.

The very top, the diamond bud, is tipped with a 76 carat diamond.

Singapore - Singapore Press Holdings Auditorium

For readers who had read my older blog, you guys should know that I was invited for the same dialogue last year.

Time really flies, it is time for another new session of dialogue for 2016.

The Straits Times Forum Writers' Dialogue is an event most, if not all, of the forum writers looking forward to.

We, the writers, kind of get a summary of what the Forum column had published and  how it affected the society.

Again, I would like to thank The Straits Times (Forum team) to invite me for this year dialogue.

Looking forward to attending The Straits Times Forum Writers' Dialogue this evening.

P/S: Once again, hope that I can attend it every year.
