Singapore

Racial Harmony Day is celebrated annually on July 21.

The event is to commemorate the 1964 Race Riots, which took place on 21 July 1964.

During the riot, 23 people were killed and 454 injured.

Students are taught the importance of maintaining racial and religious harmony in Singapore’s multicultural and multi-ethnic society.

Racial Harmony Day was launched in 1997 as part of the National Education programme conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) for schools.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong attended Racial Harmony Day ever said:

"Singapore for many years did not have race riots or other racist incidents, this did not just occur naturally."

"In turn, we must understand that racial harmony is painstakingly created."

Singapore Government's approach is:

Do not hide the truth of the history of ethnic conflict, but instead make that incident as a national memorial day.

Let us bear in mind the lessons learnt from history and cherish the racial harmony we have today.

P/S: During our era, we did not have "Racial Harmony Day", but our text book cover also promote racial harmony.

Eid al-Fitr

Singapore - Geylang Serai

Eid al-Fitr, festival of breaking of the fast, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramaḍān.

The religious Eid is a single day during which Muslims are not permitted to fast.

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramaḍān.

The day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month of Shawwāl.

The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on the observation of new moon by local religious authorities, so the exact day of celebration varies by locality.

In Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia, Eid is more commonly known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Hari Raya means Celebration Day in Malay.

On this day, Muslims celebrate with their families and to ask forgiveness from parents, in-laws, and other elders.

It is common to greet people with "Salam Aidilfitri" or "Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid".

Muslims also greet one another with "maaf zahir dan batin", which means "Forgive my physical and emotional wrongdoings".

Children are given token sums of money, also known as "duit raya" (usually in green packet), from their parents or elders.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Hari Raya
