Why Different Dates?

Singapore (Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery)

Today Singapore Buddhists celebrate Vesak Day.

Some may ask, why do Buddhists in Singapore and Malaysia celebrate Vesak Day on two different dates this year?

The month May usually has one full moon, but since there are 29.5 days between full moons, there are occasionally two.

If there are two full moons in May, some countries such as Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Malaysia celebrate Vesak on the first full moon.

Other countries, such as Singapore and Thailand celebrate the festival on the second full moon.
