Scintillating Witticisms

Singapore - Bugis

Busy preparations for the Lunar New Year, just a blink of an eye, today is Yuanxiao Festival.

Yuanxiao Festival is the earliest Eastern Valentine's Day.

In ancient times, girls were not allowed to go out except on Yuanxiao Festival.

Yuanxiao Festival evening the girls could justifiably meet strangers.

The Indians also celebrate Yuanxiao Festival, which was led by Tang Xuanzang.

The book "Da Tang Xi Yu Ji" recorded that in India a Buddha relic glowed in the air, just in time for China's Yuanxiao Festival.

Studies had shown that the so-called glowing light was actually caused by fireworks.

The five major Gods of Wealth in China are: Wang Hai (middle), Bigan (East), Chai Rong (South), Guan Gong (West) and Zhao Gongming (North).

There are other Quartet Gods of Wealth: Duanmu (Southwest), Li Yuzu (Northeast), Fan Wei (Southeast) and Liu Haijun (Northwest).

The above has been known as the nine-way Gods of Wealth formation of "all directions" by Taoism.

The Lunar New Year's time (first day of the first month of the lunar calendar) is between January 21 and February 21 of the Gregorian calendar.

Lunar New Year is also called Yuan Dan.

The earliest Lunar New Year was on January 21, 1966.

The latest Lunar New Year was on February 20, 1985.

According to the calendar calculation, if the lunar calendar is not artificially adjusted, February 21, 2319 will usher the "latest Lunar New Year" in history.

The lunar calendar has intercalary month.

Therefore, Lunar New Year may occur twice.

Intercalary Lunar New Year also known as the intercalary first month, began with the use of the calendar system in 1645 AD.

By 2800, the intercalary Lunar New Year will happen five times, in 2262, 2357, 2520, 2539 and 2634.

The nearest to occur will be in 2262, it seems that we will not have any chance to encounter.

If fortunate enough to encounter this situation, in principle, Lunar New Year will celebrate on the first month of the lunar calendar, but it may also celebrate twice.

The Lunar New Year's Eve will also fall on the twenty-nine day of the last month of lunar calendar.

It is normal in the lunar calendar not to have 30 days in a month.

The current lunar calendar is arranged according to the astronomical data of the earth, the moon and the sun.

The average period of the moon from round to short is 29.53 days.

The number of days in the month of the arrangement must be an integer, which leads to the appearance of the big month and the small month, and there will be a situation of 30 days in a month and 29 days in a month.

If this is the twelfth lunar month, then Lunar New Year's Eve will arrive on the twenty-nine day of the lunar month.

Although Lunar New Year's Day is a holistic custom, the daily celebrations are different.

From the first day to the seventh day: Chicken Day, Dog Day, Pig Day, Sheep Day, Cow Day, Horse Day and Human Day.

Legend has it that "Nüwa" first made chickens, dogs, pigs, sheep, cows, and horses in six days.

After accumulating experience, she created human on the seventh day.

Therefore, the seventh day is also the birthday of everyone!

Why visit flower market before Lunar New Year?

People buy flowers mainly peach blossoms, narcissus and small citrus trees which symbolized best of luck and great achievements.

The pomelo and the word "blessed" have the same pronunciation and the pomelo is called Yuzi, which is considered to have auspicious meaning.

Eating pomelo during Lunar New Year symbolizes the full possession of golden and jade.

The pomelo and the word "have" also have the same pronunciation, meaning possession, cancelling the bad luck and bringing in good fortune in the coming year.

The word "福" (good fortune) is affixed with attention!

The word "福" on the main door cannot be pasted reversed.

In the tradition, water tanks, garbage bins and cabinets, the word "福" has to be pasted reversed.

In order to avoid the pour of the family's blessings when pouring water and dumping garbage, they reverse the word "福" at these two places, and used "Blessing Come" to offset the "Blessing Go".
